Budget notebooks have never been better. The low end notebooks were always in the price of $ 800 or more, and never really packed “oomph” higher specification expensive laptops. This can be changed. Dell Inspiron 1300 starts from $ 599, a model we examined only $ 800 USA (Although you can get on a less generous during the upgrade, thanks to Dell coupon offers) and can handle most if not all daily tasks.
So what’s inside?
The 1300 is a customizable notebook that is built to order, so the price and characteristics will depend on what you choose when you buy. The mode we used for this review has an Intel Celeron M360 processor running at 1.5GHz, a 60GB hard drive at 5400RPM, 512MB RAM, a nice 15.4 “widescreen display, and bringing things to 802.11a/b/g WiFi .
Design and ergonomics
I asked some of my friends what they think about 1300 and the verdict was that this notebook is “despicable”. You can make your own mind from the pictures. Personally, I do not agree. Silver accent around the keyboard contrasts heavily with black plastic shell, and although I would prefer metal case, it does work. If you pick up his notebook and waves around (I do not recommend), you see that screen depend not wobble or bending, and the display remains firmly where it should - open. This is great for such an inexpensive laptop, when I recall the old Dell Latitude l400 (at a price much higher, laptop) will be flat again, even if you move it to your knees. Notebook 14 “x 10.5″ x 1.41 “in size and weighs 6.7 pounds. Now I used to pretend that this subnotebook. In fact, it is more mid-sized model, which is much more than portable desktop replacement. In the DVD + RW drive to the right notebook, in the direction of the front. Left side of the house three USB 2,0 ports, VGA port, a microphone and headphone jacks (3.5 mm), ExpressCard (support 34mm and 54mm cards) slot, RJ -45 Ethernet and a modem connector slot. notebook back empty, apart from power socket, but on the homes of two car speakers and four LEDs.
The keyboard and pen
The keyboard is just a pleasure to use. The keys are very pleased to feel with them, and they are very generous spaces. By pressing function key will allow you to access the numpad (1 to a party, 4, U, etc.) and hardware functions, as the volume, expectations, etc. delete key is used to produce little, but otherwise you wont require any adjustment of desktop keyboards.
Perot is normal Synaptics pad found on most Delz. This quick and responsive, and you can adjust the way to move the cursor to suit your needs. But in the end, it’s just a feather, like most other notebooks.
Horse power and efficiency
As already mentioned, Inspiron 1300 notebook is configured with processors from Celeron M 1.4GHz to 1.73GHz Pentium M, all with 400 MHz front side bus. Clearance, came with 1.5GHz processor Celeron M360, 512 MB RAM 2x 256 MB of configurations, so if you want to update you have to throw one (maximum 1gb RAM), rather quickly on the 60 gigabyte 5400. / Min hard drive and WiFi 802.11a/b/g. I wont deny that I was expecting to be disappointed by this notebook. While I can really behave like a class player, I played some intense games (Rome: total war, and Sniper Elite mention a few), and expecting them not to run well. Well, I now everything is back. I have migrated from the desktop works 2.4GHz Celeron and 512 MB RAM, not on the schedule and XGA screen, and I am getting better placement in the notebook! Well, Sniper Elite simply does not match the contact pads, but hey, it works! You do not want to run serious CAD applications or Half Life 2, however. Built-in DVD + RW-is a bonus for mobile recording DVD, as well as the theft of $ 780! I am not very opinionated on the Express Card slot. I think it is good that Dell has in mind forwardly, and with WiFi built, I really can think of to use for PCMCIA slot. If you really want to use EVDO card, it does not lack. You decide whether this benefit or disadvantage.
The display, graphics and multimedia
Inspiron 1300 can be placed either 14 “XGA screen, or 15,4″ WXGA (800 x 1280) screen. I went to 15.4 “option. Although not as bright shine or, as some other laptops on the market, it does work, and certainly a step forward compared XGA monitor. Lights enough for everyday use. If you are in dark room, then it may be painful for setting it at full brightness, but about 75% should be good enough. This screen is not determined, dedicated graphics card, but, as mentioned, it is quite good enough for demanding games. Inspiron 1300 has integrated Intel Media Accelerator 900 Graphics, and you can install up to 128 MB RAM as video RAM.
Audio package is reasonable. If you are not getting a wonderful, mind-blowing audio experience, your not disappointed. Two columns at the front are adequate, but if you want to listen to music rather serious, plug in some headphones or better speakers. The absence of a microphone, rather annoying, especially when using Skype.
DVD, and play on this laptop, although mentioned speakers can sometimes be quite bleak. Battery life could be problems if you want to see two and a half hour film on the full screen brightness with WiFi enabled, but also because 50% brightness is acceptable and there is no need for WiFi when watching movies, most will find its use.
Ports, expandability and WiFi
1300 has a number of ports, which should suit most users. Trio USB 2,0 slots sit on the left side (although a bit cramped), as well as VGA, RJ-45 Ethernet connector and a modem. ExpressCard slot is on this side, too. Power connector on the back below the hinge. I can not think of any other ports you need for a laptop if you need PCMCIA.
You can expand to ExpressCard slot on the left side of a laptop. At the time of writing, there is almost no cards and peripheral devices on the market fit into this slot, but, again, with WiFi Built, there isn’ta lot to add other than EVDO, or FireWire.
WiFi very well on this notebook. This integrated 802.11a/b/g Dell 1470 wireless card, so it will connect to a lot of everything. The strength of connections is neither bad: I was able to pick up one floor 11b network and, although two walls with “very high” signal status, while my PDA with a map WiFi Senao, usually drop out.
Batteries
I decided to pay more than $ 20 and receive 6 - battery option. I believe that if you have money, you get it. It is a small price to pay for 1.5 times the normal battery.
6-cell 5045mAh battery, which is not bad for 1.5GHz notebook. I got about 3 hours when using Skype mainly over WiFi, as well as about 3 hours, not playing WiFi mp3s. Overall, I think the battery is acceptable. If you need WiFi, full screen brightness and full CPU speed, you can get only a few hours from it, but otherwise it is quite impressive battery. Standard battery cell 4, 29 WHr Li-Ion battery, Dell estimated that lasting 2 hours.
Conclusion
Inspiron 1300 has a set of criteria for budget laptops even while, with its strong performance and even better prices. While speakers quite badly, and the absence of a microphone, it is annoying that you really expect for $ 800 laptop?
